For the past 22 years, the California Masonic Foundation has joined in an important celebration: Recognizing the California Teachers of the Year. On Feb. 15, 2016 California Masonic Foundation Executive Vice President Doug Ismail joined State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson in recognizing the extraordinary accomplishments of the 2016 California Teachers of the Year:
• Daniel Jocz – Downtown Magnets High School, Los Angeles (2016 National Teacher of the Year candidate)
• Mitch Bahr – Foothill High School, Palo Cedro
• Michelle Cherland – Carrillo Ranch Elementary School, Indio
• Doug Green – Valley Middle School and Carlsbad High School, Carlsbad
• Ann Park – Greenleaf Elementary School, Oakland
“The teachers we are honoring today are dedicated, energetic, innovative and very effective,” Torlakson said. “Every day in the classroom they inspire students to learn, excel and realize their full potential. Their work provides a great example for other teachers.”
On behalf of California Masons, and thanks to your generous gifts, Ismail presented each of the Teachers of the Year with a $1,000 check to recognize their extraordinary accomplishments. This year, for the first time, the Foundation also awarded each of the finalists and semifinalists with a $250 award – bringing the fraternity’s total investment to more than $8,500.
In a personal letter to the Foundation, Park wrote, “I am truly touched by your very generous gift. It’ll come in handy, as I was planning to buy supplies for our school’s first Family Science night. Thanks so very much. Your support of the CA Teacher of the Year Foundation over the years is much appreciated.”
Karen O’Connor, chairman of the board of directors for the California Teachers of the Year Foundation, said “The Masons have been strong supporters of not only our California Teachers of the Year, but also our recognition programs, since before our gala began in 2000. Their unwavering support and recognition over the years is so meaningful to all of us, and we look forward to continuing this partnership as we develop new ways to expand the outreach and positive influence of our teachers throughout the state.”
Give to the Annual Fund to help be a part of this effort to recognize our great California teachers.
