Melvin Jones was born on January 13, 1879 in Fort Thomas, Arizona. Jones was a prominent business leader in Chicago and member of a businessman’s luncheon club. He soon realized that like minded individuals who possess the drive and ambition to run a successful business, could come together and apply their skills to do a lot of good in the community. Inspired by this idea, Jones founded the Lions Club International on June 7, 1917. By 1950, membership reached 400,000, and is estimated at over 1.3 Million members today, collectively raising over 700 Million dollars to date, for various humanitarian efforts. Melvin Jones was Initiated in 1906 at Garden City Lodge No. 141 in Chicago Illinois. Brother Jones was called from labor on June 1, 1961.
